"Den siste atenaren" is a novel in Swedish by the Swedish writer
Viktor Rydberg (1828-1895). It was first published in the daily
newspaper "Goeteborgs Handels- och Sjoefartstidning", starting in
February 1859. It also appeared as a book later the same year, with
the fifth edition in 1892. An English translation by W. W. Thomas Jr,
"The last Athenian", appeared in 1869. The 6th through 14th Swedish
editions appeared as volumes 5 and 6 of the author's collected works
("Skrifter", 14 volumes). "Skrifter" also has a commentary by Swedish
literature historian Karl Warburg (1852-1918).
