En vreemd mag het heten: sinds Massijn dood is gelooft niemand in
het dorp, behalve misschien de heren De Vreught, Spittael en
Potvlieghe, nog een enkel woord van al de wondere dingen die de
jongeling zo vaak over Congoland placht te vertellen; evenmin als
wat die handelsreizigersachtige explorateur Kinel er op een
zondagnamiddag in _Het huis van Commercie_ kwam over uitkramen.

Men hecht alleen nog geloof aan de onbeschaamde verzinsels van
blikslager Blink, die dadelijk klaar gezien heeft in Massijns geval,
en die nog wel eens, op zondagmiddagen, een gapende groep
dorpelingen rond zijn deur geschaard houdt, genietend van 't vermaak
ze te verbluffen door zijn snoeven, tot de graad somtijds zijn eigen
leugens te geloven.
