On the 27th of June, General Hooker requested to be relieved, and General Mead assumed command of the Army of the Potomac. This change of commanders was accomplished while the two great armies were in motion. There was no excitement over it. On the whole, they had more confidence in the latter; but the main object was to beat Lee.
