connaissance avec les B. dont j'epousai plus tard la fille ainee. La
R----, qui depuis la mort de mes beaux-parents nous appartient, n'est
pas, vous l'avez-vu, tres distante de la Quartfourche; deux ou trois
fois par an, je retourne causer avec Gratien et Casimir, qui cultivent
fort bien leurs terres et me versent regulierement le montant de leur
modeste fermage. C'est la que je m'en fus tantot apres que je vous eus
quittes.

La nuit etait bien avancee lorsque Gerard acheva son recit. C'est
pourtant cette meme nuit que Jammes, avant de s'endormir, ecrivit sa
quatrieme elegie:
