't Is uit... ik voel dat het voor altijd uit is en dat ik nooit op
het aardig boerderijtje meer terug zal komen...

Twee ouderwetsche leege stoelen in den ouderwetschen
schoorsteenmantel, waarin vroeger de twee oudjes zaten, het ventje
oolijk grappenmakend, het vrouwtje soms wat knorrig pruttelend,...
twee kleine vlammetjes die grillig-speelsch tegen elkaar opdartelen
en stoeien, het een een ietsje grooter dan het andere en om de beurt
elkaar met een dun rookstaartje uitdoovend en weer aanvurend (het is
mij soms te moede of het de plaagzieke zielen der twee oudjes
zijn)... een koddige horloge-kast en blinkend-koperen emmers langs
den muur,... dat alles zacht-oplevend in een teederen weerglans van
bloeiende lentepracht daarbuiten en bezield door de frischjeugdige
verschijning van hetZieneken van weleer, die het vechtlustig jong
koewachterken beknorde,... 't is alles wat er nog in mijn herinnering
van overblijft,... 't is alles wat ik er van wensch in mijn geheugen
te bewaren...
