Transcriber's Note

This edition, being encoded in ASCII, cannot display accented characters,
a few of which were used in this book. The following details how these
characters have been handled.

The names Andre and Fremont should have an e acute accent.

Guerriere should have a e grave on the second e.

The "ae" in Caesaria and Encyclopaedia were both printed with a
ligature.

Lastly, preeminence and reenslavement both had a diaresis on the second
e.

In addition to these accent changes, the word "pounds" has been used
instead of the British pound sign.
