of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom
of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which
is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee,
Ye must be born again. The wind bloweth where it listeth, and
thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it
cometh, and whither it goeth; so is every one that is born of
the Spirit. Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these
things be? Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of
Israel, and knowest not these things? Verily, verily I say unto
thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen;
and ye receive not our witness. If I have told you earthly things,
and ye believe not; how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly
things? And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came
down from heaven, even the Son of man, who is in heaven. And as
Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the
Son of man be lifted up: that whosoever believeth in him should
not perish, but have eternal life.
THE FIRST SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY
THE COLLECT.
O God, the strength of all them that put their trust in thee,
mercifully accept our prayers; and because through the weakness
of our mortal nature we can do no good thing without thee, grant
us the help of thy grace, that in keeping of thy commandments we
may please thee both in will and deed; through Jesus Christ our
Lord. _Amen_.
THE EPISTLE. 1 St John iv. 7.
Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God, and every
one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth
not knoweth not God; for God is love. In this was manifested the
love of God towards us, because that God sent his only-begotten
Son into the world, that we might live through him. Herein is love,
not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to
be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we
ought also to love one another. No man hath seen God at any time.
If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is
perfected in us. Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in
us; because he hath given us of his Spirit. And we have seen, and
do testify, that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the
world. Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God
dwelleth in him, and he in God. And we have known and believed the
love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love
