A goldsmith by trade (at the sign of the Griffin in Change Alley), he became one of the greatest merchants of London. He was a near kinsman of Sir Josiah Child, and sat for Colchester from 1689 down to Queen Anne's first parliament (Parliamentary Returns, 1878, part i, pp. 556, 580, 587, 594, 602). He was sheriff in 1692-3, but was never lord mayor.
