Dean Chadwick's treatment of the Gospel of St. Mark is in almost perfect proportion, happy in style, just and reasonable in temper, and full of helpful and suggestive thinking. The Colossians and Philemon, by Dr. Maclaren, finely illustrate those subtle, spiritual gifts of intellect and imagination that have made him the favourite teacher of so many earnest and devout readers. In the Book of Genesis a much more difficult and thorny piece of work fell to the lot of Dr. Marcus Dods. There are at the present moment peculiar difficulties in the treatment of those early chapters of Bible story. The minds of general readers are hesitating between the old literal and somewhat secular interpretation of the narrative, and the new, more scientific, but not always more ideal and spiritual reading of the record.
