Missing quotation marks and minor punctuation inconsistencies were
silently corrected. However, punctuation has not been changed to
comply with modern standards. A deviation in paragraph-ending
punctuation in the original publication should be noted for
paragraphs in which dialogue immediately followed. Both a comma
and a colon were used and have been retained in this book.
Illustrations have been moved where necessary so that they are not
in the middle of a paragraph.
