A L'AGE DE QUATRE ANS

Quand je fouillais mes vieux grimoires,
Pour te reciter ces histoires
Que tu suivais d'un air vainqueur,
O mon fils! ma chere esperance!
Tu me rendais ma douce enfance,
Je sentais renaitre mon coeur.

Maintenant l'atre est solitaire,
Autour de moi tout est mystere,
On n'entend plus de cris joyeux.
Malgre les larmes de ta mere,
Dieu t'a rappele de la terre,
Mon pauvre ange echappe des cieux!

La mort a dissipe mon reve,
Et c'est en pleurant que j'acheve
Ce recueil fait pour t'amuser;
Je ne vois plus ton doux sourire;
Le soir, tu ne viens plus me dire:
"Grand-pere,--une histoire,--un baiser."

Que m'importe a present la vie,
Et ces pages que je dedie
A ton souvenir adore?
Je n'ai plus de fils qui m'ecoute
Et je reste seul sur la route,
Comme un vieux chene foudroye!

A vous ce livre, heureuses meres!
De ces innocentes chimeres
Egayez vos fils triomphants!
Dieu vous epargne la souffrance,
Et vous laisse au moins l'esperance
De mourir avant vos enfants!
