Bonaparte arriva a Toulon le 20 floreal an VI (9 mai 1798). Sa presence
rejouit l'armee, qui commencait a murmurer et a craindre qu'il ne fut
pas a la tete de l'expedition. C'etait l'ancienne armee d'Italie. Elle
etait riche, couverte de gloire, et on pouvait dire d'elle, que sa
_fortune etait faite_. Aussi avait-elle beaucoup moins de zele a faire
la guerre, et il fallait toute la passion que lui inspirait son general,
pour la decider a s'embarquer et a courir vers une destination inconnue.
Cependant elle fut saisie d'enthousiasme en le voyant a Toulon. Il y
avait huit mois qu'elle ne l'avait vu. Sur-le-champ Bonaparte, sans lui
expliquer sa destination, lui adressa la proclamation suivante:

"SOLDATS!

"Vous etes une des ailes de l'armee d'Angleterre. Vous avez fait la
guerre de montagnes, de plaines, de siege; il vous reste a faire la
guerre maritime.

"Les legions romaines, que vous avez quelquefois imitees, mais pas
encore egalees, combattaient Carthage tour a tour sur cette mer e
