Les dernieres victoires de Rivoli et de la Favorite, la prise de
Mantoue, avaient rendu a la France toute sa superiorite. Le directoire,
toujours aussi vivement injurie, inspirait la plus grande crainte aux
puissances. _La moitie de l'Europe_, ecrivait Mallet-Dupan[1], _est aux
genoux de ce divan, et marchande l'honneur de devenir son tributaire._

Ces quinze mois d'un regne ferme et brillant avaient consolide les cinq
directeurs au pouvoir, mais y avaient developpe aussi leurs passions et
leurs caracteres. Les hommes ne peuvent pas vivre longtemps ensemble
sans eprouver bientot du penchant ou de la repugnance les uns pour les
autres, et sans se grouper conformement a leurs inclinations. Carnot,
Barras, Rewbell, Larevelliere-Lepaux, Letourneur, formaient deja des
groupes differens. Carnot etait systematique, opiniatre et orgueilleux.
